The children's hour program for the deaf, Philippines

29 March 2004

Country: Philippines

Organisations involved

  • Medical Missions-Pacific Rim Group of Lions International

Synopsis

We have issued over 5000 hearing aids to profoundly deaf children, most enrolled in sign language schools, throughout the Philippines. Three thousand of those hearing aids came from the Lions District MD -105 of the British Isles and Ireland. Three thousand children now have a sense of hearing and our goal is to further educate these children and give them a chance in this troubled world we live in.

We are establishing speech therapy schools, which is the next logical step once hearing is established, so community communication can be achieved in the local language or dialect.

We are issuing guitars to these schools to encourage use of the hearing aids by the students and music is a great form of communication and a source of livelihood for their future. This has been a great success and very rewarding personally for us.

We have set a policy of accountability for each and every hearing aid donated by our supporters. A photo is taken and sent to our donors, a smiling face of a child is worth a million words.
