This article highlights the fact that information about HIV/AIDS has not been made accessible to Deaf and disabled young people in Botswana. By examining the signs used by a group of Deaf young people in Botswana for HIV/AIDS, the authors shed light on how this issue is perceived by the Deaf community. The article goes on to describe the leadership and sign language training that has been organized for Deaf young people by the Ministry of Education’s special education section, and the link between the involvement of Deaf people in the provision of hearing aids and Deaf empowerment.
